Nonfiction and Very Short Fiction Competitions

The Guild Complex is pleased to announce its Nonfiction and Very Short Fiction Competitions. A prize winner will be selected in each category from open submissions. Each winning writer will receive a $500 cash prize and will read their winning pieces at the Guild Prose Awards on Wednesday, December 9, 2009. Writers must be 21 years of age or older and a legal resident of Illinois to enter.

 

Submission practices:

  • Work must be previously unpublished.
  • Only one submission per writer – no exceptions please. (If you can’t decide which piece to submit, ask a friend to help you decide, but not the Guild Complex.)
  • Submissions must be typed in a legible font, no less than 12-pt. type size.
  • Submitted pieces must be original work from the writer.
  • The writer must be available to read on December 9 or will be ineligible for the prize.
  • The Guild Complex will accept submissions beginning Wednesday, October 15, 2009.
  • Submissions must be post-marked by Monday, November 9, if sent through the postal service.
  • Electronic submissions must be time stamped by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 16.
  • Nonfiction submissions may not exceed 5,000 words.
  • Very Short Fiction submissions may not exceed 1,000 words.
  • Please include a word count on the upper right corner of the first page.

 


 

Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Awards

The Guild Complex is pleased to announce the 16th anniversary of the Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Awards (GBOMA) for poetry. Twenty semi-finalists will be selected from open submissions. These 20 poets will perform their work in front of an audience on Tuesday, July 14. Poets must be 18 years of age or older by the date of the reading and a legal resident of Illinois to enter.

The winner will receive a $500 cash prize.

Submission guidelines:
• Work must be previously unpublished.
• Only one submission per poet – no exceptions please. (If you can’t decide which poem to submit, ask a friend to help you decide, but not the Guild Complex.)
 

Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Award


The Guild Complex is proud to present the 15th annual Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Award for poetry (GBOMA). Curators will select 25 semi-finalists from open submissions. These 25 poets will perform their work in front of our audiences on Wednesday, June 25, 2008, 7:00PM, at the Chopin Theatre, 1543 W. Division, Chicago. Poets must be 18 years of age or older and a resident of Illinois to enter. An entrance fee of $5 is required. The winner will receive a $500 prize.
