Semi-Finalists, Finalists & Winner - 17th Annual Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Award (The Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Award was founded by the noted Chicago poet almost two decades ago. Every June it showcases performance poets in an exciting, audience-driven competition.) Talented poets performed their work in their own, distinct voices. Audience members listened attentively, sometimes even laughing or humming out loud in recognition of the powerful words, and made their votes carefully. Emcee Toni Asante Lightfoot guided us through the evening, a beaming sun. And Tristan Silverman was named this year’s winner of the $500 prize for a powerful piece "Trusting the Body Female," which was inspired by Caster Semeyna. If you see any of the folks below around town, feel free to treat them like a winner. |
